Laboratory of bentos
This working group explores various biological aspects of the macroinvertebrates that make up the benthic community and vegetation of continental aquatic ecosystems, such as their diversity, trophic relationships, reproduction and biotic indices, as well as their ecophysiological responses to anthropogenic disturbances. Its main areas of interest are the rivers, streams, and riiverine wetlands of the Pampean rivers and the Río de la Plata.
¿QUE TAREAS REALIZAMOS?
Using the information generated from their studies, the aim is to conduct an ecological characterization of these environments to identify potential stressors and predict their behavior. This will generate application tools for the diagnosis, evaluation, and management of lotic systems in our region.
LINES OF RESEARCH
- Study of the diversity of benthic and macrophyte-associated macroinvertebrates and their structural and functional responses, and the application of biotic indices in assessing the quality of pampas aquatic environments. The purpose of this line of study is to generate useful tools for management agencies for the sustainable management of resources.
- Evaluation of the effects of anthropogenic pollutants on freshwater invertebrates to identify early indicators of environmental quality. In particular, physiological parameters are studied at different levels of organization, from the molecular to the organismal, to determine sensitive biomarkers that also help to discriminate pollutants with different toxicity mechanisms that are representative of our region.
- Study of different aspects of the reproductive process of pampas aquatic invertebrates that may or may not be subject to some stress situation. The information generated can be used as a tool to monitor the status of freshwater ecosystems in the region.
